With a Hospital, a Community Health Service, 2 Aged Care Facilities, 3 Medical practices, Specialist Consulting rooms and a multitude of supporting health providers Kyneton and district has health services matched in few other country areas. Although each of the healthcare providers are detailed separately in this guide there is close cooperation between them both in Kyneton and across the Shire.

 

General Practice Medical Centres

Each of the 3 general practice medical centres has a range of other medical personnel and services in addition to their GPs. Here we will simply list the GPs at each Centre, each Centre’s operating hours and what other services are offered. Medicare Claims and Bulkbilling

Practices vary in their approaches to bulkbilling. Patients will need to check with the Centre of their choice regarding their protocols.

Kyneton does not have a Medicare Office but in the main the Medical Centres send on-line claims to Medicare for the patient. There are Medicare Offices at 56 Queen St Bendigo, 533 High St Melton and 122A Puckle St Moonee Ponds.

 

After Hours GP Service

All 3 GP Centres use Central Highlands Medical Service a combination of several practices in the area which ensures that for urgent out of hours cases a doctor will be on call. The out of hours number for  Central Highlands Service is 1300 557 512.

Hospital – Kyneton District Health Service

The Kyneton District Health Service is a public hospital providing services to the Macedon Ranges Shire with a range of acute overnight and day stay beds, a 3 chair dialysis service and a 30 bed high care Aged Care Service. It offers a wide range of medical and surgical services in addition to midwifery and birthing services. Facilities include 2 operating theatres, radiology, pathology & pharmacy. KDHS also provides an Outreach care service which includes District Nursing, Palliative Care, Hospital in the Home and Post Acute Care.

 

Kyneton District Health Service (Hospital) works closely with its partners: the GPs, Cobaw Community Health, Macedon Ranges Health Service, Oliver House and the Macedon Ranges Shire Council with the goal of jointly ensuring the best possible health outcomes for the community.

 

The Hospital has a long and proud history and is much cherished by the local community. The current modern hospital building in Caroline Chisholm Dr opened in May 2003 but the original bluestone Hospital in Simpson St commenced in 1856.

 

Surgical Services

The well equipped theatres enable specialists to provide procedures of up to medium complexity, including endoscopic procedures.

 

Specialists currently consulting at the Health Service cover:

Dermatology; Urology; Plastic Surgery; General Surgery; Paediatric Surgery; Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery; Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

 

Women’s and Children’s Services

Childbirth: KDHS offers a low risk birthing service to families. Since the commencement of the new Hospital site the number of childbirths has grown significantly. In 2006/7 just short of 200 babies were born at the Hospital.

 

Antenatal Clinic: The Antenatal Clinic offered in Kyneton and other parts of the Shire provides high quality antenatal and postnatal care. Appointments can be made by phoning the Hospital on 54229900.

 

Childbirth Classes: The Service’s midwives’ childbirth education classes are conducted bi-monthly both within  the Hospital and soon within the community. Husbands/partners are encouraged to attend with expecting mothers.

 

Renal Dialysis

Kyneton Hospital’s 3 chair dialysis unit is operated in conjunction with North West Dialysis Service (Melbourne Health). The Dialysis Service delivers acute and chronic interventions to patients requiring renal replacement therapies. In addition the service manages patients in the pre-dialysis phase.

 

Outreach Services

The KDHS outreach service offers: District Nursing Service, Palliative Care, Hospital in the Home, Post Acute Care. Specialist nursing care is offered to all members of the community who require home visiting services.

 

Aged Care

Thomas Hogan Aged Care Service is part of the Kyneton District Health Service and is co-located with the hospital. Further details are in the Chapter 14 of this guide.

 

Patient Information

Single, shared and day stay accommodation is well appointed. Menus are constantly adjusted to ensure quality and variety whilst meeting requirements of a balanced diet and any special nutritional requirements. A television service is available if required.

 

Visitor Information

Hospital Visiting Hours:       Hospital: 11am-8pm daily

Midwifery: 2pm-8pm daily

 

Visitor Meals: Meals can be arranged for visitors by the nursing staff at a small fee.

 

Emergency Service:

The Hospital does not have a doctor present at all times but skilled nurses triage and provide care in collaboration with medical officers as appropriate in emergencies. A general practitioner is on call for emergencies at all times.

People who are seen by a doctor in the emergency department will be charged a private consultation fee by the doctor. This amount may be in excess of the scheduled fee and payment is expected at the time.

 

Helipad: The Hospital has a helipad on site and very urgent patients are sometimes transported to a metropolitan Hospital by helicopter.

Children

Family Day Care: Home based child care for children between 0-12 years. Child care occurs in the homes of registered child care providers.

 

 

 

Early Intervention

Early childhood intervention is for the families of children under school age with developmental delay. A range of therapies are offered including speech, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

 

Counselling

Cobaw provides services in all areas including family, youth, couples, individuals, depression and personal issues.

 

Accommodation Support

The Supported Accommodation & Assistance Program (SAAP) works with people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Cobaw also offers information and referral assistance with bond application and housing.

 

Emergency Relief

Cobaw has limited funds to assist with emergency food supplies, medicines and petrol. Those wishing to apply must contact Cobaw reception to make an appointment.

 

Volunteers

Cobaw offers wonderful volunteer opportunities including work in aged care, community garden and the men’s shed.

 

Alcohol and Other Drugs

Cobaw offers a wide variety of services for those experiencing alcohol and other drug related problems. These include: counselling, diversion program, withdrawal, youth outreach, family drug help program.

 

 

Youth

Hearsay: Free medical appointments for youth under 25.

 

Youth Counselling: Free, ongoing counselling for all youth.

 

Community Development Programs

Cobaw is involved in a range of community projects designed to foster health and wellbeing.

Cobaw runs a wide variety of group programs including: walking, parenting, strength training, community garden, alcohol & other drugs education,& diabetes, asthma, cardiac and arthritis education.

Disability Services and Activities

 

Disabled Parking Permits

People who are residents of this Shire and have a disability that inhibits their ability to walk or have been diagnosed with a disability expected to last more than 6 months may apply for a permit. Permits may be for a driver, passenger or both. Responsibility for issuing disabled car parking permits lies with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council Community Support Unit.

Application forms can be obtained by phoning the Shire on 54220333 or by downloading it from the website www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au. The application form is to be completed in part by the applicant’s medical practitioner.

 

 

Windarring – Adult Training & Support Services

Information: Windarring is a not for profit community based organisation that provides training and support for adults with intellectual and other disabilities. For more than 30 years Windarring has integrated and supported individuals through:

day & evening programs; outreach programs: and support accommodation at Millend Kyneton. The aim of Windarring’s programs is to increase the range of positive experiences, settings and opportunities for further training, integrating within the community and skill acquisition.

 

Programs vary according to participants needs but can include: Art, Drama, Music, independent living skills, vocational training & work experience, social & community support, accommodation & support, supported employment, leisure & recreation, computer skills, advocacy, literacy/numeracy, community access.

Eligibility: Any adult with a disability may be eligible to use Windarring services. Eligibility and referrals can be made through the Department of Human Services, or you can phone Windarring for more information.

 

Windarring started in Kyneton but now also has centres in Castlemaine and Gisborne.

Kyneton Community Mental Health Service provides assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with severe emotional and/or behavioural disturbances. All referrals need to be made through the 1300363788 number. This is a 24 hour service.

St Luke’s Anglicare is a regionally based “not for profit” organisation providing a diverse range of services for individuals, families and communities.

 

Services:

Disability Support Services

This service provides flexible support to people with an identified disability, ie intellectual, sensory, physical or acquired brain injury. Respite for carers of people with an intellectual disability is also available.

 

Recovery Focused Mental Health Services

Programs include individual and group support, activities and socialising, housing related rehabilitation and support for adults with mental health issues. Respite for carers of those with mental illness is also available.

 

Children and Families

When things get difficult for families St Luke’s might be able to assist. They provide family and individual support, foster care placements for 0-12 year old children and advocacy while the family and St Luke’s staff work together towards finding solutions to family difficulties.

 

Pre-School Field Worker

The Pre-School Field Worker offers support to children with additional needs in state funded pre-schools.

 

Financial Counselling

This service provides free confidential information and support, particularly in relation to debt issues.

 

Gamblers Help

Therapeutic counselling is available from St Lukes for people with gambling issues and their families. Financial counselling is also available to people with problem gambling.

 

Community Education

St Lukes also offers community education programs to service providers and community groups.

 

No Interest Loans Scheme

The Kyneton Community & Learning Centre and St Lukes are currently working to create a NILS (No Interest Loans Scheme) for benefits or low income. For further details contact the Community and Learning Centre on 54223433.
