Car Parking

All parking in the Kyneton business district is free and at most times it is possible to find a car parking spot very close to where patrons wish to shop.

Most parking within the shopping precinct has a 1.5 or 2hr limit.

The car parks adjacent to the Safeway and IGA supermarkets have a 2hr limit.

There are 4 all day car parks within 100m of either Mollison or High Streets:

Kyneton Railway Station has a large all day car park for commuters

Most streets close to the shopping precinct allow all day parking.

Cinema

Kyneton Town Hall is able to show films and has been the Kyneton Cinema in past years but it has not shown films on an ongoing basis for some years.

The nearest Cinemas are the Castlemaine Theatre Royal which often shows arthouse films (30 min trip), the Sunbury Cinema Complex (30 mins), Watergardens (45 mins) or Bendigo Cinema Complex (50 mins).

Firewood Collection in the Macedon Ranges

Private land: People can collect fallen/dead timber from private land if they have the permission of the landowner.

Firewood Collection Permits:

Permits are required to collect firewood on Crown Land or on roadsides.

Crown Land: People can purchase firewood collection permits from the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) or their agents. Firewood collection can only occur at designated sites in the Wombat State Forest. Maps are provided when people obtain a permit.

Kyneton Town Hall

The Hall and associated offices in pre-amalgamation period was the Kyneton Shire Hall and administrative centre of the Kyneton Shire. It was partially constructed in 1877, with the Theatre section added in 1927 and the old part of the offices in 1971. The Council Chambers upstairs continues to be used for meetings of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and its committees. The Hall, the Richardson Room and the upstairs meeting rooms are still used for community group meetings, events and for functions. As the only Shire building of the quality and capacity to house big audiences the Hall has become the Shire’s venue for high quality visiting entertainment at affordable prices.

Live Performances and Theatre

The Kyneton Town Hall in Mollison Street is a well appointed venue and has high quality visiting music, comedy and drama performances throughout the year. The program can be found on www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au .

The Bluestone Theatre (formerly the old Congregational Church built in 1860) in Hutton St is the home of the Kyneton Theatre Company. It is the venue for the Company’s performances, the Annual One Act Play Festival held during the Kyneton Daffodil & Arts Festival and visiting performances over the year.

Museum

The Museum bluestone building itself is recognised by the National Trust. It was built in 1855 as a Bank of New South Wales in the gold rush era. The former bank manager’s residence, stables, servant’s kitchen, laundry & cellar house the fascinating exhibits.

The Museum is owned and operated by the Shire and its voluntary support group (Friends of the Kyneton Museum) plays an active role in ensuring its ongoing development.

Kyneton’s main Newsagency is Collins Newsagency at 95 Mollison St. It retails a wide range of newspapers and magazines. Residents within the Kyneton township wanting to organise home deliveries of newspapers need to do so through Collins 54221460.

The sub-newsagencies:the BP Service Station in High Street, the Factory Milk Bar in Beauchamp Street, Kuppers Service Station at Mineral Springs and the Carlruhe Service Station also sell the daily newspapers and some magazines as do the Safeway and IGA supermarkets.

Planning Permits

If you intend to construct a building, change the use of a building or land or carry out any form of works/construction then a planning permit may be required from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Anyone who is unsure whether they require a planning permit can contact a Council Planning Officer through 54220333.

Planning Application forms can be obtained by phone request, visiting the Shire Office in Mollison St or by downloading from www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au. Charges apply. Time to process the application will depend on its complexity. The Shire’s Planning Department is located at the Gisborne Office – so a trip to Gisborne may be needed if a face to face meeting with the Planning Officer is required

Visitor Information Centre

Kyneton Visitor Information Centre is located in the Jean Haynes Park in High Street just East of the Edgecombe St intersection. Staffed by local volunteers the Centre is open from 9am to 5pm on every day of the year except Good Friday and Christmas Day. It is a great resource not only for visitors but also for locals as it stocks maps and a wealth of information about local attractions and events and also about attractions across the State. Waste and Recycling Collection and Disposal

Collection of garbage and materials for recycling

For residents in the Shire’s collection areas garbage is collected weekly and materials for recycling fortnightly. All of Kyneton and District’s garbage (placed in the small 120l bins is collected from the Kerbside on Tuesdays but Kyneton North’s recycling (In bigger240l bin) is collected one Tuesday and Kyneton South the alternate Tuesday. The Shire recommends that bins be out for collection by 6am. Bins should be as close to the gutter as possible with the handle nearest the house. The garbage and recycling bins should be at least a metre apart.

The calendar for collection which contains full details of what can be recycled can be obtained from the Shire Office in Mollison St or from www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au .

The annual charge for the initial set of garbage and recycling bins and the associated service is $190 which is levied through the quarterly rates payment.

Stolen or missing Bins Were a residents bin is either missing or stolen they need to complete a declaration and fax it to the contactor on 54415008. The forms can be obtained from the Shire Office or downloaded from www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au

Open: Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun: 10am-4pm except total fire ban days, Christmas, New Year and Anzac Days and Good Friday.

The Station accepts green waste and hard waste (such as furniture, bicycles, mowers, etc.) at a charge.  Recyclables are accepted free of charge.

Recyclables include glass, aluminium cans, paper and cardboard, plastics codes 1, 2 and 3, and steel cans.

Computers, mobile phones and phone batteries can also be disposed of free of charge.

Waste Disposal for residents not in the Shire Collection area.

These residents can take their garbage to the Transfer Station in Redesdale Road (charges apply) or can arrange to pay a private contractor to do a weekly collection.

The local private contractor is Bins Direct 54248122.

Disposal of Printer Cartridges Printer cartridges can be taken for recycling to the Kyneton Post Office and the Kyneton Office Shop.

Disposal of Pharmaceuticals and Medicines

Unused medicines should be taken to Pharmacy. The pharmacist will arrange for their safe disposal.

Disposal of Household Chemicals

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, once each year at a time and location notified in the local media, receives unwanted household chemicals such as paints, batteries, weed killers, solvents, glues etc.

Youth Justice Centre – Malmsbury

The Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre is located at the Southern end of Mollison Street Malmsbury. The original centre was built in 1965 and following a major redevelopment a new centre was completed in December 1997.

The Centre accommodates up to 74 males aged between 18 and 21 in four purpose built units. Malmsbury has no external perimeter enclosure. Security is based on active staff interaction with clients.
