Cat & Dog Registration

All cats and dogs must be registered with the local council by the age of 3 months and all registrations must be renewed by April 10 each year. A renewal form is mailed out by the Shire prior to the deadline. Only registered greyhounds are exempt.

Microchipping: State legislation requires that no new applications to register a dog or cat, including animals moving into the Shire from another council area, can be accepted unless the animal has been implanted with a microchip (proof required).

The registration form is available from the Shire Offices in Mollison St or can be downloaded from www.macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au  If you are moving to a new municipality you must transfer your pet’s registration to avoid being fined.

Restricted Breed Dogs

State legislation requires specific controls for keeping certain breeds of dog. These breeds include: American Pit Bull Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro. State laws mean that restricted breed dogs that were not registered in Victoria before Nov 2 2005 may be seized and destroyed. These dogs are no longer allowed to come into Victoria from other states.

Restricted dogs that were registered before November 2005 must be muzzled and leashed in public and must be desexed.

Failure to declare the breed of your dog, if it is one of the restricted breeds, may result in a fine of up to $500 or a prosecution in the Magistrates Court.

Macedon Ranges Shire Local Law places a limit of 2 dogs & 2 cats on land up to 4000 sq m (ie a one acre block); and 4 dogs & 4 cats on land greater than 4000 sq m.
